About Waverley Liberal Democrats

Waverley Liberal Democrats are a passionate local campaigning organisation fighting for fairness across the borough. We campaign to represent you at all levels of government, from Farnham, Godalming & Haslemere Town Councils and surrounding Parish Councils to Surrey County Council and at Westminster.

In 2023, Waverley Liberal Democrats had strong electoral success, returning 22 borough councillors and 24 town councillors. As a result, we continue our coalition control of Waverley Borough Council and Godalming Town Council, and have overall control of Haslemere Town Council.

Following the 2023 boundary review, Waverley now incorporates about two thirds each of the new parliamentary constituencies of Godalming & Ash (including Cranleigh & Villages) in the east and Farnham & Bordon (including Haslemere) in the west.

In 2024, Lib Dems Paul Follows (Godalming & Ash) and Khalil Yousuf (Farnham & Bordon) both narrowly missed out on winning these parliamentary constituencies, which are now the number 1 & 2 target seats nationally for the Lib Dems.

One ward in the east of Waverley, Ewhurst, falls in the Dorking & Horley parliamentary constituency, which returned Liberal Democrat Chris Coghlan as their MP.

With a strong tradition both locally and nationally, we are fighting to build a greener, fairer, more caring country.

Our principles

The Liberal Democrats are different. We believe in putting people first, in enabling them to achieve their potential and giving them control over their own lives. We believe in equality, opportunity and community and stand for the rights of everyone, no matter what their backgrounds are. As it says at the beginning of our party constitution:

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

Our volunteers

Our great strength lies in the support of the many volunteers who help us stay in touch with the borough’s needs. From talking to residents, to clerical work and delivering leaflets, they are the key to our continuing success in championing our communities. We are always looking for people to join our growing team.

Our members

Tens of thousands of people are members of the Liberal Democrats, and every single one of them gets to decide on policy, select our leader and local representatives, and choose the direction of the party. We’re liberal, progressive, and internationalist. Our values have put us on the right side of history: from leading the fight against the Iraq war and tripling renewable energy production, to legalising same-sex marriage and fighting Brexit every step of the way. If you share our values and want to turn that into making a real difference, join us today.

Our area

The borough of Waverley encompasses Farnham, Cranleigh, Godalming, Haslemere and everything in-between. Here is a map of the area we cover.

In the west of our borough covering the areas between Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere, we have prospective candidate Paul Follows for the South West Surrey constituency.

And in the east, covering Cranleigh & villages, we have part of the Guildford constituency with our prospective candidate Zöe Franklin hoping to represent residents at Westminster.
