π¨ Enough is Enough: Cranleigh and Alfold Infrastructure Crisis π¨
Residents of Cranleigh and Alfold have reached breaking point. Our water and sewage systems are failing, and the consequences are impacting our daily lives. The latest burst water main on Wanborough Lane, Cranleigh, is just one example of the ongoing chaos that rural communities like ours endure far too often and for far too long.
The daily reality:
- Roads are frequently closed without warning as water mains burst and repair crews scramble to respond.
- Residents are left without water on regular occasions.
- Heavy rainfall leads to sewage flooding gardens, threatening homes, and leaving residents unable to use their toilets.
- Our rivers have become polluted dumping grounds, further harming our environment.
- The electricity network is inadequate, struggling to meet the needs of our growing population.
- Crumbling roads only add to the frustration and danger for residents.
This situation is untenable. Despite years of unprecedented housing growth in Cranleigh and surrounding areas, there has been no corresponding investment in infrastructure to support this expansion. Our communities are being asked to shoulder the burden of unchecked development without the essential systems needed to sustain it.
For more than a decade, Cllr Liz Townsend has raised these issues at the highest levels of government, yet the response has been silence. With government housing targets rising to unprecedented levels, the strain on our outdated infrastructure will only worsen unless action is taken.
Calling for change:
Cllr Liz Townsend is now calling on the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to visit Cranleigh and Alfold and witness firsthand the dire consequences of this neglect.
Liz has said, βWe have exhausted all other avenues and, while this is a longshot, where else do we have to go? The water companies are in a mess, they donβt have a clear plan, or the money to invest in our water and sewage network. We are in the midst of a growing crisis! After years of inaction from the previous government, Iβm taking this issue to the very highest level in the hope that someone, at last, will listen.
This is not just about Cranleigh β itβs about every rural community suffering from inadequate infrastructure and government neglect.β
Rural areas like Cranleigh deserve better. We deserve functioning water systems, safe roads and a healthy environment. Together, we can make our voices heard and push for the change we so desperately need.
