Local Lib Dems pledge to defend wildlife in Farnham as government plans to scrap protections
One big success for Farnham Liberal Democrats was the formal handover of Ticeʼs Meadow over from Hanson quarry company, after a long-running and successful campaign to preserve the area as a permanent nature reserve.
Working with community groups, local councillor and Liberal Democrat Mark Merryweather played a key direct role in arranging the purchase of this site and its permanent protection.
After ex-PM Liz Truss indicated she will tear up environmental protections in much of England, the RSPB, National Trust, and Wildlife Trusts warned of an “attack on nature”. Local Lib Dems Mark Merryweather and Paul Follows are campaigning to protect wildlife and environmental protections, such as the Habitats Directive, from attacks by Conservative governments.
They believe new developments should come with open space, and that corporations and developers should respect nature.
Farnham Liberal Democrats agree new housing is necessary - but with existing rules already allowing developers to try to build outside the agreed Neighbourhood Plan Area, proposed changes will be scrutinised and vigorously challenged when necessary.
