Liz & Alan for Cranleigh West
Liz Townsend and Alan Morrison are standing for election on Thursday 4th May to deliver the representation Cranleigh deserves at Waverley, and to fight tirelessly for residents.
All of our candidates are standing behind our Building Opportunity manifesto to deliver better public services, quality social housing and investment into our high streets and training.
Liz Townsend
Liz Townsend is standing for re-election to Waverley Borough Council this May.
Liz has proven that she is an experienced and dedicated Councillor at Parish, Borough and County levels, rising through Waverley’s Executive to become the portfolio holder for Planning and Economic Development. She is also managing the projects for the new multi-million pound Leisure Centre and for the community led High Street Improvements.
She has a well earned reputation for sustained hard work all year round, tackling issues head on and is relentless in fighting the corner for her community. Liz’s achievements are many, more recently she has secured funding for a new safer Pelican crossing on Ewhurst Road and was instrumental in securing £4M towards improvements to the high street. She would like to see more decisions being made in consultation with residents. She has supported with targeted funding local community services including Rowleys, Mens’ Sheds, Cranleigh Rugby Club, Cranleigh Football Club, and Warm Hubs.
Under her leadership the Waverley Economic Development team were shortlisted by the Federation for Small Business for their Covid-19 support plan and she has instigated the introduction of much stronger climate change and sustainability criteria for planning applications. Liz continues with her long fight with Thames Water to reduce sewage discharge into our rivers and streams, to replace our deteriorating drinking water pipes, and improving supply to Cranleigh and surrounding areas.

Alan Morrison
Alan is standing for election to Waverley Borough Council to join Liz and be a dependable representative for Cranleigh.
Attracted by the surrounding beautiful Countryside and great facilities, Alan Morrison and his wife Paula moved to Cranleigh in 2006 thinking it might be for two years, but seventeen years on, they are still here; "Cranleigh is a difficult place to leave, in part because it’s a friendly community, the village is lucky to still have a butcher, a fishmonger, a baker and a Handyman Store." Alan recognises the important contribution independent shops bring to the high street and as a Councillor is keen to work closely with local businesses to help them grow and thrive and to attract new business to rent the current empty retail units in Cranleigh High Street.
For nearly 40 years Alan worked in the reinsurance industry both in the UK and overseas. In his spare time Alan has been a volunteer with handicapped teenagers and adults and raised funds for such organisations while running marathons in his younger days. Since retiring in 2016 Paula and Alan set up the Luigi Francescon Trust to support organisations such as the Fountain Centre in Guildford which assist cancer sufferers and their families. The Trust is also funding a Surrey University research project to ascertain if exercise helps cancer patients with their treatment and rehabilitation.
Staying physically fit is important to Alan and he is keen to roll up his sleeves and get involved in Cranleigh’s new leisure centre project and work alongside Liz Townsend and other health and well-being organisations across the village to promote the health benefits of regular exercise.
