Our Haslemere East & North team

Our Lib Dem Haslemere team are standing for election on Thursday 4th May for Waverley Borough and Haslemere Town Councils this May, and hope you'll back them to give Haslemere and Grayswood residents a strong voice at our local councils.

At these elections, Haslemere East is one ward at Waverley Borough Council, but is split into North and South at the Town Council. The North ward includes the area north of the railway and Grayswood.

All of our candidates are standing behind our Building Opportunity manifesto to deliver better public services, quality social housing and investment into our high streets and training.

Peter Nicholson

Peter is standing for re-election to Waverley Borough Council in May in Haslemere East.

Peter is married and has lived in Haslemere almost 40 years. Now retired, his work had been in scientific, capital projects planning and marketing.

He is currently a Waverley Borough and Haslemere Town councillor and if re-elected, will continue to support increased provision of social housing for rent, using existing council owned land throughout the Borough.

Peter is a strong supporter of the Haslemere Neighbourhood plan with the proviso that all developments must have acceptable fresh water and sewerage facilities. He will continue to campaign for a further mid-evening number 19 bus which travels the length of the Town and support the ban on heavy vehicles to protect Lion Green in winter.

Terry Weldon

Terry is standing for election to Waverley Borough Council and Haslemere Town Council this May.

Originally from South Africa, where for many years he was an anti-apartheid campaigner, Terry is now a British citizen and has lived in the UK since 2003 (and in Haslemere since 2006).

Following a career in market research and later in education, Terry is now semi-retired, and works part-time delivering medicines for a local pharmacy, which has given him an acute awareness of the difficulties faced by some of the elderly and vulnerable people in our community. As a long-term rare cancer patient, he is a trustee for GISTCancerUK, and also a consumer representative with the NCRI Sarcoma Clinical Unit.

Terry has been a Haslemere town councillor since 2019, serving on the Climate and Biodiversity Emergency, Finance and Governance, and Planning committees - since 2022 as chair of the latter.

Ollie Leach

Ollie is standing for election to Haslemere Town Council.

Many people will know him as Ollie from Oliver’s Coffee shop & wine bar. He has been a volunteer for Guildford Samaritans for 10 years and represented the branch as Branch Director.

If elected, Ollie will aim to provide support to our community for those who need a little helping hand, and he feels it is important that our lovely town remains united.

It's the first time Ollie will have role like this, but with the support of his family and our community, if successful, he will jump at the opportunity to contribute to Haslemere's community.

Phil Miller

Phil is standing for election to Haslemere Town Council.

Phil (pictured right) has lived with his wife Nicola in the town for over thirty years and now puts his energy into delivering Lib Dem values to support the residents in Haslemere and Grayswood.

His interests include gardening, growing vegetables and walking across the local area and South Downs. He is a volunteer with the National Trust and supports their work to provide rewilding of our countryside. Professionally, Phil was an engineer and facility manager in the space & research industries.

He is a keen supporter of any thing that makes Haslemere safer for adults and children, both from traffic and from the effects of low air quality. Phil would like to encourage less car-based travel and champion the maintenance of pavements, footpaths and hedges.

Hear from Phil on his Facebook page.

John Weatherburn

John is standing for election to Haslemere Town Council.

John moved to Haslemere in 1986 and been married for forty years with three daughters, each of whom were educated locally.

His working background includes a masters degree in Chemistry from Oxford University and a masters in Soil Chemistry from Reading. Now, he's retired but was employed as advisor to a member of the board of directors of Aramco, the world's largest company.

John is committed to action on climate change, while promoting an inclusive and supportive society that listens to and acts on the values and concerns of all local people, irrespective of political view or life situation.
